Amazon has successfully built a large and growing marketplace in India focused on meeting the Indian consumers’ needs. In order to deliver greater value to our customers, Amazon would like to develop and sell an exclusive range of Private Label brands and products across categories. The Amazon Softlines team is looking for a talented, smart, experienced and entrepreneurial Design Lead to help us build a truly exceptional private label kid’s apparel and footwear business.

Joining the Amazon Softlines team means partnering with a dynamic and creative group that sets a high bar for innovation and success in a fast-paced and changing environment. This role will be responsible for managing design & product development for Kids apparel and footwear, building relationships with vendors/manufacturers, driving incremental selection in the apparel and shoes store, and working with stakeholder teams to deliver a best-in-class customer experience that will result in category leadership in the online market segment.

We expect the Design Lead – Kids to be a passionate customer and category advocate within Amazon, with proven design & product development capabilities and project management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively prioritize and multi-task. The Design Lead – Kids must be an effective leader and communicator in working with some of Amazon’s most important partners and vendors, as well as with internal cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with a passion for Retail, have a deep understanding of industry trends and demonstrate a high level of ownership and customer obsession.

The Design Lead – Kids must: 

  1. Act as the ‘business owner’ for his or her categories, possessing an understanding of internal and external variables that impact our business (this entails owning trend forecasting, understanding market gaps, opportunities & competition, understanding of all technical aspects of product development on their assigned category/categories, along with responsibility for driving strategic projects to achieve business objectives)
  2. Have a thorough understanding of the industry, seasonality and global trends/events, and continually monitor competitor/industry developments
  3. Maximize Amazon’s selection & impact long-term business profitability
  4. Have a complete understanding of the customer needs, both existing and potential, and use that knowledge to deliver products that provide Amazon customers with an unparalleled shopping experience
  5. Coordinate with cross-functional teams, and communicate with internal and external parties, while meeting tight deadlines

Basic Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s diploma/degree in Fashion Design
  2. Minimum 8 years of experience – with exposure to retail/exports
  3. Proficiency in design apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw
  4. Minimum 5 years of experience independently managing product design for a range of kid’s fashion sub-categories

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Ability to conceptualize design ideas based on market opportunities & customer needs
  2. In depth understanding of technical aspects of product development – pattern making, fabrics, spec making, sizing, construction, etc. – in kid’s fashion
  3. Trend analysis & forecasting abilities
  4. Ability to illustrate – by hand or using design software
  5. Planning & developing product ranges – ability to work closely with vendors/manufacturers to create product proto-types based on the design plan
  6. Ability to invent & simplify
  7. Ability to think both strategically and tactically with strong attention to detail
  8. Proven track record of taking ownership and driving results
  9. Good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  10. Ability to influence multiple stakeholders and engage with senior leadership
